Open screening of refugee video makers 27th of September 2019

In the evening of 27th of September, an open event took place in the city of Mytilini, with short-movies about the hot-spot prisons of Lesvos and Samos – but also about reasons to flee and about daily experiences of discrimination. So many people came to see the screening that the place was finally so overcrowded that it was difficult for everybody to fit in.

The film-makers commented on their own movies. It was the first time they did a screening of their work all together and it brought together movies from different islands and time-periods. There will be a second chance to see the movies. Tonight they will be shown during the festival “melody and the rhythm of freedom for all“ in the old olive factory near to Panagiouda at the sea side.

You can find once more the full program of the video-screening here:

And here the invitation for today’s festival when the film-screening will come together with a music event of various musicians from near and far:

All together we had passed already an amazing day in the informal part of the hot-spot camp of Moria, playing music and documenting in the same time.

Here you can find the work of the video-makers online, so you can get an imagination of their work, in case you are far away:

Recent arrivals on the Aegean islands; News from Lesvos

June 10th

Yesterday, the police release more than 70 of the migrants and refugees who had recently arrived on the island and who were detained under inhuman conditions inside the port area for a few days. Some of them had been already transferred to different police stations on the island for further detention. The release was a consequence of further arrests on the island and overcrowded cells. Families from Afghanistan, Syria and men and women from Somalia took the ship to Athens.

On Thursday 13th the local activist network “Village of all together” is planning a protest in front of the port where the migrants are usually being detained. Currently there are less than 10 persons left inside the port area among them a pregnant woman, minors and a small baby. Also the syndicate of the coast guard is planning to react on the inhuman detention conditions and the inhuman working conditions for their staff inside the port.

Meanwhile another 44 refugees arrived yesterday on Samos island. The detention centre on Samos has a capacity of 300.

Press Release by the Solidarity Group of Samos – Detention of Syrians under miserable conditions

Samos 07.12.12 – Movement for the Human rights – Solidarity to Refugees

PRESS RELEASE

Following the visit of members of the Movement in the coast guard facilities where 41 persons – among them eight newly arrived women and seven children mainly coming from Syria – are hold, and where we were asked to offer our support with clothing and hygiene articles, we noticed the following:

In this informal detention place of the Samos coast guards’ special forces men, women and children are closed up together with three penal detainees and one unaccompanied minor who is waiting since long time to be transferred into a special reception centre for minors.
The detention place is absolutely unsuitable and the detention conditions are miserable. There are no matresses, blankets, hygiene articles and there is only one toilette. The newly arrived Syrian refugees came wet and exhausted without being offered dry clothes or food.
The treatment by the authorities and the abolute lack of protection that the Greek government is encountering them with are reminding of darker periods when the informal detention centre of Kapnokoptiriou was still in function – a warehouse of souls.
The coast guard – the responsible ones for the detention – told us that they had requested support from all local authroities without receiving any responds.
